You are already home and the car has not been inspected

Most people only think about an expert report once they are home and the insurer's figure turns out to be lower than the workshop's. That is later than ideal, and it is still workable — provided the vehicle has not been repaired yet.

Stop before the repair

An unrepaired vehicle can be inspected normally wherever it now stands, and the assessment is barely weaker for having happened at home. The evidence that matters — the damage itself — is still there.

Once panels are replaced, that stops being true. So the single most useful thing you can do right now is not book the repair until the damage has been documented.

If a repair has already begun, do not undo it — but ask the workshop to pause at the current stage and photograph everything as it is. A partly dismantled vehicle is often the best possible moment to document hidden damage.

If it has already been repaired or sold

An assessment can still be built from photographs, the repair invoice, the parts list and the workshop's documentation. It answers fewer questions than an inspection, and we will say plainly which ones — but it is frequently enough, particularly where the dispute is about specific positions rather than the whole claim.

What we can still establish

The extent and plausibility of the damage in relation to the described event; the repair method appropriate to the vehicle; the parts and labour a proper repair requires; and, where relevant, loss of market value and the values that decide a total-loss calculation.

What we will not do is assert findings the material does not support. Where a question cannot be answered from what exists, the report says so — a document that overreaches is worth less than one that is precise about its own limits.

The insurer already paid. Is it too late to question the amount?

It depends on what you signed and on the applicable rules — a legal question, and for that we recommend a lawyer specialising in traffic law. The technical question of what the damage actually was is answerable independently of that, and it is the basis for any further discussion.

The workshop found more damage than the insurer's estimate covers.

That is the common case, and it is why an inspection before repair matters. Have the vehicle documented in its current, partly dismantled state — hidden damage is at its most provable at exactly that moment.

Do you inspect at my home, or does the car have to go somewhere?
