Accident on the A4 between Verona, Vicenza and Padua

The A4 between Verona and Padua carries holiday traffic to the Adriatic, freight to eastern Europe and the daily commute of one of the densest industrial regions in Italy — often in the same two lanes, often through roadworks.

Why this stretch produces the claims it does

Traffic density plus permanent roadworks equals rear-end collisions. Speed drops from motorway pace to walking pace with little warning, and the vehicle that fails to react is the one carrying a roof box and a full holiday load — which changes both the braking distance and the damage pattern.

The second pattern is the lane-change collision in three lanes of mixed traffic, where a car overtaking a lorry meets another car doing the same from the far lane. Liability here is often apportioned rather than assigned, which makes the damage geometry decisive: the impact angles either support a described manoeuvre or they do not.

A loaded vehicle also matters for the assessment itself. Luggage, bicycles on a rack, a roof box — these transfer force in ways an empty test vehicle does not, and the resulting damage to mountings and the rear structure needs to be documented rather than assumed.

Where damaged vehicles go

Recovery goes to yards near the exits at Verona Est, Soave, Montebello, Vicenza and Padova Ovest. This is a well-served region — workshops, transport companies and salvage buyers are all within a short radius, which is an advantage when a residual-value question has to be tested against a real local market.

It is also the region where a decision about repatriation is most finely balanced. Verona is roughly four hours from the Brenner and eight from southern Germany, so transport is affordable — but repair capacity here is good, and a straightforward repair may be faster done locally.

What to do at the scene

On a motorway, safety first: hard shoulder, hazard lights, high-visibility vest, warning triangle at the prescribed distance. Then the CID, then the photographs.

Record the kilometre marker and the direction of travel. On a corridor this long, "near Vicenza" describes forty kilometres of road, and the exact position matters when the sequence of events is later reconstructed.

Send the photographs the same day. If the vehicle is drivable and you are continuing your journey, we will tell you whether that is advisable and where the vehicle can be seen on your route.

Frequently asked questions

The other driver says we are both partly at fault. Is that normal?
Shared liability is a normal outcome in Italian practice, particularly in lane-change cases. It is not a failure of the claim — it is a percentage, and the percentage follows the evidence. This is precisely where a documented damage geometry does its work.
My roof box and bicycles were destroyed too. Are they part of the claim?
They are documented as damaged property with their values — that is a factual matter we can record. Whether they are compensated depends on the basis of the claim and the applicable law. Photograph them in place before anything is cleared away.
Should I have the car repaired in Italy or at home?
Once the damage is documented, either is possible. Repair capacity in Veneto is good and the region is used to foreign customers. Decide it on the numbers — transport cost against repair time — not under pressure at the roadside.
