Accident in Venice, Mestre and around the port

Nobody drives in Venice, which is exactly the point: every vehicle in the area is either passing through Mestre, parked for a week at Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma, or queuing for a ferry. Each of those situations produces its own kind of claim.

The Mestre junction

Mestre is where the A4, the A57 ring and the airport traffic meet, and the traffic mix — commuters, tourists reading signs for the first time, freight heading east — makes it one of the busiest accident locations in the north-east.

Sudden lane changes towards a missed exit are the classic cause. Photograph the signage and the lane you were in; on a junction this complex, the road layout is part of the evidence.

Parked for a week while you are on an island

Cars left at Tronchetto, Piazzale Roma or the mainland long-stay car parks are unattended for days. Damage discovered on return — a scraped flank, a broken mirror, a forced lock — is common, and by then nobody knows when it happened.

Report it before you leave the car park. A report made on site is far stronger than one made after driving home, and most comprehensive policies require notification to the local authorities for unidentified-party damage anyway. Photograph the vehicle in the space, the surrounding vehicles and the parking ticket with its times.

The ferry terminal and transit to the east

Venice is a departure point for ferries to Greece and Croatia, and the A4 east of the city carries transit traffic towards Trieste and beyond. Vehicles here are loaded, towing, or carrying roof and rear racks — and damage to those loads and their mountings needs to be documented as carefully as the vehicle itself.

If you are due to board a ferry, tell us straight away. A preliminary assessment from photographs can usually be done in time for you to decide whether to travel with the damage or leave the vehicle.

I found the damage when I came back to the car park. Is it too late?

Not if you act before you leave. Report it at the car park and to the local police, photograph everything in place, and note the entry and exit times from your ticket. That combination is what makes an unattended-damage claim workable.

My vehicle is at the port and I have a ferry booked.

Send photographs now. In most cases we can give a same-day opinion on whether the vehicle is fit to travel, and if it is not, arrange for it to be seen where it stands rather than after it has crossed the Adriatic.

Can you inspect a vehicle in a multi-storey car park?

Yes. We need the level, the space number and access arrangements — some operators require the owner's written authorisation, which is a short email.
