Spring in Italy: gravel, motorcycles and the first long trips

Spring is the season of the first ride, the first long trip and the first pass of the year — on roads that have just come through winter and have not been swept yet.

Gravel, potholes and thaw damage

Winter gritting leaves gravel on bends well into the spring, and the pass roads are the last to be cleaned. On two wheels, gravel on the exit of a bend is the single most common cause of a spring fall.

The thaw opens potholes, particularly on secondary roads and the older sections of the Via Emilia and similar routes. Wheel and suspension damage from a pothole is a claim like any other — photograph the hole, the location and the vehicle before it is moved, because the hole may be repaired within days.

Motorcycles back on the road

The first rides of the year combine cold tyres, a machine that has stood for months and rider reflexes that have not been used since autumn. Brake and tyre condition after storage deserve a check that takes ten minutes.

After any fall, the priority is unchanged: photograph the final positions, keep the gear and the helmet, and have the frame and fork geometry measured before anything is straightened. A machine that has been pulled straight can no longer be assessed in its damaged state.

Vehicles coming out of storage

Campers and classic vehicles emerging from winter storage carry their own risk profile: seals that have dried, brakes that have seized lightly, tyres that have flat-spotted, and — on campers — water ingress that started in autumn and has been quietly spreading ever since.

For a camper, spring is the right moment for a moisture check. Ingress found in April is a repair; the same ingress found in September is a delaminated wall.

Frequently asked questions

I hit a pothole and the wheel is damaged. Is that worth pursuing?
Possibly, depending on the road authority and your own cover. Document it immediately: the pothole, its position, the vehicle and the damage. Road defects are often repaired quickly, and the evidence goes with them.
My camper has a damp patch after the winter.
Have moisture readings taken now rather than in the autumn. The measurement grid also distinguishes fresh ingress from long-term seal ageing — which is exactly the question an insurer will ask.
I came off the bike on gravel with no other vehicle involved.
It is a comprehensive matter under your policy, and the technical question of frame geometry matters regardless of who pays. Measure before repairing.
