Accident in Rome and on the GRA ring road

Rome has a traffic culture of its own, and a foreign driver meets it first on the Grande Raccordo Anulare — sixty-eight kilometres of ring road where the lane markings are advisory and the exits arrive without warning.

The GRA and the approach roads

On the ring road the characteristic accident is the sideswipe during a merge and the rear-end collision approaching an exit queue. Traffic density stays high outside normal peak hours, and the road carries everything from commuters to long-distance freight.

Note the kilometre marker and the carriageway — internal or external. The GRA is a circle, and "on the GRA near the airport turn-off" is not a location anyone can reconstruct later.

City traffic, scooters and parked vehicles

Inside the city, low-speed contact dominates: scooters filtering through stationary traffic, delivery vehicles double-parked, and damage to parked cars where the other party does not stay. Reporting unidentified-party damage to the police the same day is normally a requirement of comprehensive cover, and it has to be done in Italy.

Vandalism and break-ins in tourist areas are a recurring category. Photograph the damage before any temporary repair, keep the receipts for making the vehicle secure, and get the police report before you leave the city.

Assessment in Lazio

Recovery goes to yards across the metropolitan area, and access arrangements vary more than in the north — some yards are straightforward, others want documents in person. We deal with that in Italian, which is generally what resolves it.

Rome is a long way from central Europe, so the repatriation question is more finely balanced than it is in the north. Get the damage documented first: the decision depends on figures the report supplies, not on the initial impression.

Frequently asked questions

My hire car was damaged in Rome and I have already flown home.
Ask the hire company for its photographs and the repair documentation, and have the damage assessed against them. If you photographed the car at collection and return, that record is worth a great deal now.
The yard is asking me to come in person to release the vehicle.
Often a written authorisation by email is enough, and we can find out what this particular yard requires before anyone travels. Give us the yard name and the vehicle registration.
Is it realistic to have the car repaired in Rome and drive it home?
Sometimes, and it can be the sensible answer. It depends on the damage, the repair time and the transport cost — all of which the report puts numbers on before you commit.

Send photos of the damage

A preliminary assessment the same day, free of charge, in English, German or Polish. Nothing to fill in — photographs are enough.
