Your car was hit in a car park and nobody left a note
You come back to the car and the wing is scraped. There is no note, no witness and no obvious way to find out who did it. This is one of the most common claims we see in Italy, and it is winnable — but only if you act before you drive away.
The next thirty minutes
Do not move the car. Photograph it in the parking space first: wide shots showing the position and the neighbouring vehicles, then the damage in detail, then the parking ticket or the space number with the times on it.
Look for paint transfer on your vehicle. A smear of another car's colour identifies the vehicle type and sometimes the model, and it disappears the first time the car is washed. Photograph it close up, in daylight, without touching it.
Look up. Car parks, shops, hotel entrances and residential buildings frequently have cameras, and footage is usually overwritten within days. Ask on the spot who holds the recording and note the name — a request made a week later is almost always too late.
Report it before you leave
File a report with the local police the same day. For damage by an unidentified party, most comprehensive policies require it, and the report has to be made in Italy — this is the single most common reason an otherwise valid claim fails.
Notify your own insurer promptly too. Policies set notification deadlines, and a late notification is an argument you do not need.
Then have the damage assessed
A scrape across two panels is rarely just paint. Photograph everything and send it to us on WhatsApp: we will tell you the same day, free of charge, whether the damage is worth a claim against your excess and what a proper repair involves.
If the other vehicle is later identified — through camera footage or a witness who comes forward — you will already have documented the damage in its original state, which is exactly what the claim then needs.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it worth reporting such a small amount of damage?
- Compare it against your excess before deciding. But make the police report anyway if you might claim — you cannot add it later, and a decision made in an hour closes off an option you may want in a week.
- I already drove home. Can anything still be done?
- Report it to your insurer and check whether your policy accepts a report made at home; some do for damage discovered abroad. Photograph the damage now, unrepaired, and keep the parking ticket — it is the only thing that ties the damage to a place and a time.
- The car park operator says they are not responsible.
- That is a separate question from your claim and usually depends on their terms. It does not affect the steps above — report, document, assess — and if you want to pursue the operator, that is a legal question for a lawyer specialising in traffic law.
