Accident at Lake Garda

Garda concentrates everything that makes Italian traffic difficult into a few kilometres of shoreline: a road carved into rock, tunnels without shoulders, motorcycles, cyclists, campers wider than the lane, and a season that triples the traffic.

The western shore and its tunnels

The Gardesana Occidentale between Limone and Riva is spectacular and unforgiving. The tunnels are narrow, unlit in places, and dimensioned for the vehicles of a different era. Mirror-to-mirror contact between a camper and an oncoming bus is a routine event here, and so is roof and side damage against rock.

Damage sustained in a tunnel has a documentation problem of its own: there is nowhere to stop safely and no daylight for photographs. Drive to the first safe pull-off, then go back on foot if it is safe to do so and photograph the location, or at minimum record which tunnel and in which direction.

Campers and caravans take the worst of it, because the damage is to the habitation body rather than to sheet metal, and body damage is exactly what a standard estimate handles badly.

Motorcycles, cyclists and summer traffic

Garda is a motorcycling destination, and the combination of tight bends, gravel washed onto the road and unfamiliar riders produces a steady stream of single-vehicle and overtaking accidents. After a fall, the priority is the same as anywhere: photograph the final positions, keep the gear, and do not have the machine straightened before it is measured.

In the towns, the mix is different: low-speed collisions with parked vehicles, scooters, and cyclists on roads with no space to separate them. These claims are small in value and disproportionately disputed, which makes photographic evidence worth more than usual.

Getting an assessment in the lake region

Vehicles are recovered to yards around Desenzano, Salò, Riva and Rovereto, and workshops in the area are used to foreign customers in season. Inspections are normally arranged within a couple of days.

If the vehicle is drivable and you are staying on, there is no urgency to move it — but do not have it repaired before it has been seen. If you are leaving, photograph it thoroughly before it goes on a trailer or before you drive it home.

Frequently asked questions

My camper was damaged against a tunnel wall. Is that a claim at all?

It depends on the basis: with no third party involved it runs against your own comprehensive cover, subject to the policy terms. Either way the damage should be assessed properly, because habitation-body damage is routinely underestimated and because water ingress through a damaged roof or wall becomes a much larger problem later.

The other driver and I are both foreign tourists. Who handles it?

The accident happened in Italy, so Italian law is the starting point, and the claim runs against the liable driver's insurer — normally through its claims representative in your country. Complete the CID at the scene; that document is what makes the rest straightforward.

Can you inspect the vehicle at the campsite?

Usually yes, with the site's agreement — and it is often the best option, because the vehicle is where it is and nothing has to be moved. Tell us the site name and we will arrange access.
