Accident in Florence and on the A1 through Tuscany

Florence combines a medieval street plan with a restricted traffic zone and several million visitors a year. The A1 that passes it climbs through the Apennines in a series of tunnels and curves. Two very different driving environments, twenty minutes apart.

The city: narrow streets and scooters

Inside Florence the typical damage is low-speed and lateral: mirrors, flanks against walls and bollards, wheels against high kerbs in streets designed for carts. Scooters are everywhere and occupy every gap, which produces a steady stream of contact at very low speed but with an injured party involved.

The restricted traffic zone matters practically rather than legally. It does not affect how a claim is settled, but it does affect where a damaged vehicle can be taken and where it can be inspected — tell us where the car is and we will work out the access.

The A1 through the Apennines

The section between Florence and Bologna is one of the more demanding stretches of Italian motorway: gradients, tunnels, and a modern parallel route that splits the traffic unevenly. Winter brings genuine mountain conditions at the top of the pass.

Damage sustained in a tunnel or on a gradient often involves the underbody and the suspension rather than the panels. It is easy to underestimate at the roadside and worth having looked at properly before a long drive home.

Vehicles are recovered to yards around Florence, Prato and Scandicci, and inspections are usually arranged within a few days. Tourist-season demand is high, so an early call is worth more here than in most regions.

It is a comprehensive matter, subject to your policy and excess. Have the damage documented before any repair: bodywork damage against stone often extends further than it looks, particularly where a wheel or suspension component took part of the impact.
