Printable checklist: documents to collect before leaving Italy
Everything on this list is easy to obtain while you are in Italy and difficult to obtain once you are not. That asymmetry is the entire reason the list exists.
From the accident
- Your copy of the completed CID.
- A photograph of the other driver's copy.
- Other party: name, address, telephone, registration, insurer, policy number.
- Which police force attended and the report reference.
- Witness names and telephone numbers.
- The exact location: map pin, kilometre marker, road.
About the vehicle
- Where the vehicle is: yard or workshop name, address, telephone.
- Who ordered the towing, and on what basis.
- The towing order and any yard paperwork.
- Whether the keys are with the vehicle or with you.
- Whether the yard admits an external expert, and during which hours.
Receipts and costs
- Towing.
- Storage / deposit yard.
- Taxi, rental replacement, public transport.
- Unplanned accommodation.
- Any emergency repair carried out to make the vehicle safe.
If anyone was injured
- Emergency room report (referto di pronto soccorso).
- Discharge note and any prescriptions.
- Names of the facility and the treating doctor.
Before you set off
- Notify your own insurer — most policies set a deadline.
- If the vehicle is leased or financed: notify the owner in writing.
- Send everything to MOTOEXPERT on WhatsApp for a same-day preliminary assessment.
- Do not authorise repairs, do not sign anything with a salvage buyer, do not scrap the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
- I am leaving tomorrow and the yard is closed today.
- Send us the yard name and registration anyway. Access can be arranged after you leave — what cannot be arranged remotely is the paperwork you were handed and did not keep.
- Do I need the medical papers if the injuries are minor?
- Collect them regardless. Minor injuries that turn out to matter later are common, and obtaining Italian medical records from abroad months afterwards is genuinely difficult.
- Nobody gave me a towing order.
- Ask the yard for a copy when you contact them, and note who told you the vehicle would be taken there. That chain is what supports the towing and storage positions later.
